Recently released is the Olympus E-P1, which marks a new era of digital imaging innovation. This new micro four thirds camera is a part of the PEN family of cameras. The photographics optics are like that of an SLR, the only difference being that it has the smaller size and simplicity of a point and shoot. With still image quality of DSLR and A/V quality of high definition camcorder and audio recorder, the E-P1 becomes an amazing imaging studio but with a body that is ultra-portable and stylish.

Panasonic announced what I believe to be a pretty big announcement at PMA 2009 in Las Vegas. They premiered the DMC-GH1 Micro Four Thirds SLR that records full HD video.

It sports a 12.1 MP Live MOS sensor that can record up to 1080/24p or 720/60p high definition videos and has continuous AF and a built-in stereo microphone. You can add your own microphone to the camera through the optional mic input jack. The camera can be coupled to the new Panasonic Lumix G Vario HD 14-140mm lens that is designed for the video feature. It’s image stabilized too.

These new SLR’s with video keep pushing the borders of High Def camcorders. The big drawback up to this point has been autofocus and auto exposure on the video side of the SLRs. Panasonic has supposedly addressed this. I can’t wait to get my hands on one. The fact that this model records in AVCHD is also a plus because you can squeeze a lot more onto the SD memory card, and AVCHD, like it or not, is the format that most camcorders are using today. Compatibility is always a good thing

Not a Point and Shoot. Not an SLR. It’s a PEN. What will you create?

The Olympus E-P1 marks an innovative new era in digital imaging. Our new Micro Four Thirds camera upholds the legacy of the celebrated PEN family of cameras, with the photographic optics of an SLR and the size and simplicity of a point and shoot. Combining the still image quality of a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) with the A/V quality of both a High Definition camcorder and high-end audio recorder, the E-P1 is a virtual full-service imaging studio in one ultra-portable and stylishly retro body. With dozens of advanced features, the E-P1 makes documenting and sharing your everyday life easier and more creative than ever before.

ULTRA CONVENIENCE, MEGA FUNCTIONALITY
The E-P1 is the world’s smallest 12.3-mexapixel interchangeable lens system camera, yet has the creative flexibility to give you a true professional experience with ease. A still photo, video and audio recorder in one, the E-P1 creates exceptional photos, inventive slide shows, and remarkable videos both for personal use or for posting on many of today’s social networking websites. It delivers professional quality images without the bulk of a conventional DSLR, thanks to its slim body and advanced high-speed imager AF (Live View) technologies. The lens mount diameter has been reduced, enabling the use of smaller, lighter interchangeable lenses that perform at the same level as larger DSLR lenses. The camera fits easily in many pockets and purses.

12 MILLION PIXELS
With 12.3 megapixels at its disposal, the E-P1 delivers image quality that makes the difference between ordinary and exceptional still and video imaging. A Live MOS image sensor is complemented by a next generation TruePic V Image Processor, resulting in excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity, fine image details in all highlight and shadow areas, and reduced noise.

AUTOFOCUS LIVE VIEW
The Live View Autofocus system works as effectively and seamlessly on the E-P1 as it does on conventional E-System DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras. Subjects are displayed in complete focus on the bright LCD as soon as the shutter is pressed half way.

BLUR-FREE, DUST-FREE IMAGING
Say goodbye to blurry and blemished images. In both still and Movie modes the E-P1 Image Stabilization excels. The E-P1’s three-mode In-body Image Stabilization system compensates for up to four shutter speed steps in the still shooting modes with any of its interchangeable lenses: Mode 1 for general shooting, Mode 2 for creative high-speed horizontal capture, and Mode 3 for high-speed vertical capture. The camera’s Mechanical Image Stabilization automatically compensates for camera shake in low-light situations or when using a telephoto lens. In the Movie Modes the advanced Electronic Image Stabilization tracts the images both vertically and horizontally to achieve clear sharp movies, matching the performance of the in body IS. A Dust Reduction System assures spot-free images via a patented ultrasonic technology called Supersonic Wave Filter, which vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the image sensor and confines them to a special adhesive membrane.

MULTIPLE EXPOSURE
A Multiple Exposure function enables you to be creative in the landscape or portrait formats, or even a combination of the two. Multiple images can be captured and combined. The creative possibilities are endless. What will you create? Now you won’t have to wonder. With the E-P1, you’ll simply go out there and create.

AUTO ADJUSTMENT AND FACE DETECTION
The camera has 19 automatic scene modes, including Night-Scenes, Portraits and Landscapes. Its Intelligent Auto Mode (iAuto) identifies your shooting intent (including macro or sport photography) and adjusts the settings accordingly to achieve the best results. A new ePortrait Mode allows you to soften shadows and smooth out facial features, either before image capture or during post-capture edits. And a Face Detection function reduces the chance of blurred subjects when shooting several people at once, even if they’re moving while you’re shooting.

SHADOW ADJUSTMENT
No longer must you worry about the extreme contrast between dark and bright areas. The camera’s Shadow Adjustment Technology corrects for extreme light variations with high-tech efficiency. This can also be used in post-editing.

ART FILTERS
For even further creativity, there are six built-in Art Filters, all of which can ultimately be applied within both the still and video imaging process. These include Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color, Light Tone, Grainy Film and Pin Hole. The effects are instantly viewable on the LCD when using the E-P1 in Live View or when reviewing images.

CREATIVE FRAMING
The camera provides masks to help you frame images to whatever proportions you’d like. Whether your end-result goal is for conventional enlargements or for viewing on widescreen monitors, the E-P1 makes proper framing a cinch. This function can be combined with Art Filters and with multiple exposures for additional creativity.

PRO AUDIO
The recording capabilities of the E-P1 are versatile enough for all your audio needs, whether shooting stills or video. With its built-in microphones, the system can capture all the nuances of any sounds being recorded, is capable of recording and playing back WAV files, and is perfect for adding narration to still images.

TOTAL LIVE CONTROL
With the E-P1 you are in full control of all functions and imaging decisions?with split-second accuracy. Live Control, an advanced control panel system, allows you to see the image and the controls all at once on the 3-inch HyperCrystal LCD, which is noted for its vivid colors and high contrast. Whether using full manual control or all the automatic features, first-time users will feel like pros, and pros will create still images or videos that continue to push their own boundaries of creativity.

The aperture adaptively adjusts to each scene, letting you capture the kind of delicate, softly focused movies that only a digital interchangeable lens camera can produce. Thanks to a silence design that helps surpress lens drive noise, the GH1 with its new kit lens records sounds with amazing clarity. The GH1’s advanced kit lens also incorporates MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) that helps eliminate blurring from hand-shake.

Enjoy the Freedom of Manual Settings in Creative Movie Mode
The GH1 gives you more creative freedom. It lets you adjust the shutter speed and aperture any way you like when shooting movies. This gives you a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore in your movie making.

An Audio Performance that Adds to Your HD Movies
Just set the GH1 to iA mode, aim and shoot. The iA does all the rest. It automatically determines the most suitable Scene mode and helps correct blurring, focus, and brightness problems for bright, sharply focused HD movies.

Enjoy the Beauty of Digital SLR – Quality Photos the Easy Way

The Advanced iA Mode Uses Face Recognition to Remember Individual Faces
The GH1 features an enhanced version of LUMIX’s clever iA mode that includes Face Recognition, a function that “remembers” registered faces. When there’s a familiar face in the frame, it optimizes the focus and exposure so that the face is in sharp focus and bright. This newly evolved technology makes it easy to get beautiful photos of a loved one in a group of people.

Full-time Live View and Live View Finder: See How the Image Will Turn Out Before You Shoot
On the GH1, both the LCD and the Live View Finder boast true Full-time Live View capability. Live View lets you see – before you shoot – how changing the shutter speed or aperture will affect the shot. This makes it easier to capture a special shot or particular kind of image without shooting and reshooting again and again.

Technology that Supports Beautiful HD Images

Newly Developed 12.1-Megapixel Live MOS Sensor
The GH1’s 4/3-type Live MOS sensor with 12.1 megapixels gives you the best of both worlds: the superior image quality and the lower power consumption. It also adds a high-speed readout for recording HD movies. You can record images with a 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio. In each, you get the same angle of view and same outstanding image quality.

The High-Speed, High-Performance Venus Engine HD
The Venus Engine HD incorporates two CPUs. This not only boosts image processing speed, it also helps achieve an exceptional noise-reduction performance. Also, the two CPUs of the Venus Engine HD allow long-time movie recording in AVCHD while maintaining low power consumption. And the Venus Engine HD features HDMI output too.

Easily View Photos and Movies on an HDTV
Just connect the GH1 to an HDTV and you’re ready to view your photos and movies in beautiful high-definition. If your TV is HDMI compatible, a single HDMI mini cable (optional) is all you need. If you have a Panasonic VIERA HDTV, you can use the VIERA remote control to operate the GH1, giving you even greater convenience.
